About the program

The Graphic Design concentration is a practice-driven, studio-based pathway within the BA in Visual Art Studies (VAS), designed for students who want to design, experiment, collaborate, and build a real portfolio, just study theory.

This concentration flips the traditional classroom model: students learn by doing, working on real briefs, experimenting with tools, and developing ideas from concept to final execution. Classes feel more like design studios than lectures, encouraging collaboration, critique, and creative risk-taking.

Students graduate with professional-level projects, confidence in their creative voice, and a clear understanding of how the design industry actually works.

Highlights

  • Combine creative practice with wellbeing, reflection, and care
  • Learn through hands-on studio work, not passive lectures
  • Make art from day one using materials used in art therapy
  • Study in small, supportive classes designed for trust and dialogue
  • Explore the connection between art, emotion, body, and identity
  • Integrate psychology and humanities into creative practice
  • Learn how art supports wellbeing in schools and community settings
  • Develop ethical awareness when working with emotionally sensitive material
  • Collaborate in Creative Studios with students from other disciplines
  • Graduate with practical experience and a strong creative portfolio

The breadth of AAU’s arts education also equips students with skills that translate beyond traditional creative fields critical thinking, empathy, visual literacy, and the ability to interpret human experience. This foundation can inspire diverse career paths, as seen in alumna Anna Grace Cook from the School of Journalism, Media, and Visual Arts. Anna’s work explores the intersections of the natural world, humanity, and religion, and her final AAU project examined the Book of Revelation and its visions of destruction and renewal — themes that ultimately deepened her interest in healing and care.

The Graphic Design program at AAU is unique as it is a rather practical, hands-on concentration as opposed to the rather theoretical curriculum of VAS. Although tools and technologies change rapidly, employers emphasise that they primarily seek graduates with strong design principles, conceptual thinking, and the ability to develop and refine ideas. Employers also consistently highlight the importance of communication and teamwork skills, as collaboration is central to most design environments. Initiative, problem solving, and the ability to work effectively within a studio or agency setting are similarly prioritised. Recent years have seen increased demand for skills in user experience design, motion graphics, social media content creation, and the use of emerging AI tools. Despite these developments, a solid grounding in core design fundamentals—such as typography, grid systems, and visual hierarchy—remains essential to effective professional practice. The Graphic Design concentration at AAU will provide students with a strong foundation in design principles while emphasising practical, project-based learning. Through hands-on experience, students will explore a range of professional pathways and begin to identify their individual specialisms.

Students will

  • Design with industry-standard tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, After Effects, Blender, and AI-based tools
  • Work on branding, typography, UX/UI, motion graphics, editorial design, and digital content
  • Learn how to respond to design briefs, clients, and feedback
  • Develop skills in visual storytelling, systems thinking, and user-centred design
  • Collaborate across disciplines in the Creative Studio, a shared creative lab with artists, writers, psychologists, and other creatives
  • Experiment with emerging technologies and future design practices
  • By the end of the concentration, students will have a strong, focused portfolio that demonstrates both creativity and professional readiness.

Learning Outcomes

  • Create professional-quality graphic design work across print, digital, and motion-based media
  • Apply core design principles such as typography, layout, hierarchy, colour, and composition
  • Use industry-standard software confidently and adapt to new tools and technologies
  • Develop and communicate design concepts clearly to clients, teams, and non-design audiences
  • Work collaboratively in studio and interdisciplinary environments
  • Critically analyse design problems and develop creative, user-centred solutions
  • Build a professional portfolio ready for internships, junior designer roles, or freelance work
  • Understand ethical, cultural, and social responsibilities in contemporary design practice

Graduates leave with practical experience, emotional awareness, and a strong creative portfolio, along with clarity about their future professional direction.

Internship opportunities are likewise available to VAS graduates within organizations such as Kunsthalle, DOX Centre for Contemporary Art , Meetfactory, and others.

  • My Prague Experience
  • It's a great opportunity to study art in such a cultural center as Prague. The professors, often artists or important theoreticians on the Czech contemporary scene, take advantage of the vast possibilities and make their lectures outside of the classrooms. Earning the merit-based scholarship also motivates me to do my best. No other English university in Prague offers its students an education like AAU.

    Marketa Hrehorova
    Visual Arts Studies, Czech Republic
  • AAU is more than a university, it’s a very special community that helps create special bonds with teachers and classmates. It doesn’t put you into the box but rather teaches you to be yourself and choose your own path. It gives you just enough autonomy and support to achieve your goals.
