AAU President doc. Ing. Jiří Schwarz, CSc. recently joined Tomáš Zima, a scientist, academician, and former Charles University rector, on Eurocast to discuss the current state and future of higher education in the Czech Republic.
The conversation explored university funding, international competitiveness, declining interest in technical fields, artificial intelligence, and the need to update Czechia’s Higher Education Act. While the two agreed on several challenges facing Czech universities, they differed on how additional funding should be approached.
President Schwarz described how universities should first look for greater efficiency within existing resources and emphasized the need for higher education to respond more quickly to societal and labor market changes.
“The system is not flexible enough and is unable to respond to societal changes and changes in labor market demand,” President Schwarz said.
The discussion also explored the growing role of AI in education, with President Schwarz highlighting the importance of ethical guidelines while maintaining the depth of study and a strong foundation of knowledge.
