Guest Lecture: Perception of Facial Emotional Expressions – The Role of Social and Cultural Context

You are invited to attend a guest lecture organized by the Institute of Applied Psychology at Anglo-American University exploring the perception of facial emotional expressions and the role of social and cultural context.
The lecture will present research examining accuracy and bias in decoding facial emotional expressions and how social and cultural factors influence emotion perception.
Speaker: Prof. Konstantinos Kafetsios, Ph.D.
About the Speaker
Konstantinos Kafetsios is an internationally recognized social psychologist specializing in emotion, interpersonal relationships, social interaction, and cultural influences on human behaviour. In May 2026, he was appointed Professor of Psychology in the Czech Republic.
He has held academic and research positions at several European universities, including the University of Cambridge, the University of Crete, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, and Palacký University Olomouc.
In Fall 2026, Prof. Kafetsios joined the Department of Psychology at Anglo-American University, bringing extensive international research and teaching experience to AAU’s growing psychology program.
About the Lecture
Emotional interactions are an integral part of social and personal relationships, making the ability to decode the emotional expressions of others important for our social functioning.
The talk will present results from a research program examining the functionality of accuracy and bias in decoding facial emotional expressions in social encounters and the role of social and cultural factors.
The first part will demonstrate how social context impacts emotion perception. The second will present results from studies on the functionality of accuracy and bias in everyday encounters. The third will explore how cultural orientation at the individual and cultural level impacts the decoding of facial expressions.
Overall, this body of research demonstrates the function and functionality that emotion perception has in social and cultural contexts.
