Professors in the Pub: The Need for Nations?
*Only for AAU students, faculty and staff
Each month, come to Café Des Taxis to have a drink and discussion with professors and other experts about important events happening in the world. Share your questions and your views, and join the long tradition of politics in the pub
This month:
In 2004, when the project for European unification was at its most self-assured, the conservative philosopher (and sometime activist for Charter 77) Sir Roger Scruton laid out the case for a new and unapologetic national sentiment in England and the Need for Nations. Widely derided at the time, in the wake of Brexit and the seemingly insurmountable growth of populism in Europe and elsewhere, it is time to revisit the question of the necessity of the nation state and of national sentiment. What role does “the nation” play in our lives? Is it possible to move beyond a nation-focused system? Is it desirable to move beyond it? Come discuss these questions and ask your own.
This month’s Professors in the Pub will be held on November 13, 2025, at 6:30 pm, in Café des Taxis.
The lead professor will be Bill Eddleston, Chair of International Relations.
