AAU announced the launch of three new concentrations to begin in the fall 2026 semester: Creative Writing and Storytelling; Art Therapy; and Graphic Design. These represent AAU’s commitment to offering diverse, applicable, and inspiring courses that are interdisciplinary and designed to position graduates for success.

Humanities, Society, and Culture: Creative Writing and Storytelling

The Creative Writing and Storytelling concentration is designed for students who want to write, experiment, and publish. This practical program allows students to actively produce work and receive continuous feedback—not just study from a textbook. Within the BA in Humanities, Society and Culture, this concentration is aligned with existing literary studies, cultural studies, and interdisciplinary narrative research. Learning happens through: drafting stories, revising poems, scripting scenes, pitching ideas, and collaborating on creative projects.

Graduates have diverse employment opportunities in both creative and professional fields where strong writing, storytelling, and communication skills are valued. Many find positions as authors, content writers, editors, and journalists. Others work in marketing, advertising, and public relations.

Curriculum Highlights

  • Build a professional creative portfolio by graduation
  • Develop a strong personal voice across multiple genres and formats
  • Learn in small classes where your work is seen, discussed, and developed
  • Draw inspiration from psychology, culture, and real-world social issues
  • Collaborate in a cross-disciplinary Creative Studio

Visual Art Studies: Art Therapy

Visual Art Studies: Art Therapy is built to support those who want to work with materials, people, emotions, and meaning. This concentration centers around making art, reflecting on process, and learning how creativity supports their own and others’ wellbeing. Through small, interactive studios, students are supported and learn hands-on with guided practice rather than passive lectures. Within the BA in Visual Arts Studies, this concentration blends studio learning, psychology, and real-world impact.

Graduates have diverse employment opportunities in the arts or in art therapy with further training. Some have found careers in creative arts facilitation, arts program coordination, school art therapy (non-clinical), youth and community development, media and community engagement, curating, and more.

Curriculum Highlights

  • Make art from day one using materials used in art therapy
  • Graduate with practical experience and a strong creative portfolio
  • Explore the connection between art, emotion, body, and identity
  • Integrate psychology and humanities into creative practice
  • Learn how art supports wellbeing in schools and community settings

Visual Art Studies: Graphic Design

The Graphic Design concentration is a practical, studio-based concentration within the BA in Visual Art Studies, designed for students who want to design, experiment, collaborate, and build a real portfolio. Students work on real briefs, experiment with tools, and develop ideas from concept to final execution. Students graduate with professional-level projects, confidence in their creative voice, and a clear understanding of how the design industry actually works.

Although tools and technologies change rapidly, graduates have a diverse portfolio and employment opportunities as they have strong design principles, conceptual thinking, and the ability to develop and refine ideas. Many find positions in user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) design; motion graphics, film, and video production; branding, marketing communication, and social media; design research, speculative design, and design consulting; and NGO, public sector, and civic design.

Curriculum Highlights

  • Graduate with practical experience and a strong creative portfolio
  • Design with industry-standard tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, After Effects, Blender, and AI-based tools
  • Work on branding, typography, UX/UI, motion graphics, and editorial design
  • Experiment with emerging technologies and future design practices
