State Exams - Rules & Guidelines

State Exams are an important part of the education at AAU. To ensure their smooth flow, please follow these rules:

Timing/structure of the SE

  • SE committee receives the list of students at the beginning of the exam
  • Students are examined in order according to a sign-up sheet or to students’ agreement
  • The examined student draws a question and is given 15 minutes to prepare the answer (this happens simultaneously with another student answering); he/she is not allowed to leave the classroom until his/her exam is over
  • The examined student has 15 minutes to answer the question, the preparing student cannot interfere in this process in any way
  • For the defense of the bachelor’s thesis, the student is given 20 minutes (10-15 minutes presentation + questions from the committee)

The examination committee

  • The examination committee has 3 (or more) members: two experts in the field and the chair of the SE committee
  • At least two members of the SE committee must be present throughout the entire answer of a student
  • The committee has to agree on the final grade; any misunderstanding or disagreement between examiners should be resolved with the Chair of the SE and the Dean of SBA
  • The committee cannot discuss the grades or details about the grading process with or in front of students; in case a student requests an explanation, the Dean of SBA shall be present

Examination/Grading

  • Students will be provided with paper and all necessary supplies during their preparation
  • Dictionaries are allowed, the examiners check and approve them
  • Students will be allowed to talk about the chosen topic first; then, if necessary, questions will follow; questions cannot be leading or biased, examiners should not explain the correct answer during the SE
  • The grades for the SE are: excellent, very good, good, fail
