DescripciónIn this course, students will learn about basic principles of abnormal psychology. The first part of the course will provide background for critical understanding of psychopathology, including definitions of normality and abnormality, their historical and cultural variations and dilemmas related to classifications of mental disorders. Drawing on the DSM-5 Manual, the second part of the course will provide detailed descriptions of main categories of mental disorders, supplemented with case studies. In the concluding part of the course, students will be introduced to treatment of mental disorders, including main systems of psychotherapy and medication. The primary focus is on development of critical thinking and the ability of students to apply their knowledge in real life.

– Develop the skills and background knowledge that will enable them to think critically about issues of mental health and mental disorders and apply them constructively in their lives

– Understand the complex influences on the development of mental disorders, including genetic, biological, interpersonal, social, and environmental factors
Identify most common mental disorders both in adulthood and childhood/adolescence and adequate therapies/treatment

– Emphasize the need for evidence-based prevention and interventions strategies
