Anglo-American University Visual Arts Professor, Alena Foustková will open her new exhibition, Postcards from the Czech Republic, at the Galerie Středočeského (GASK) in Kutná Hora introducing a project in which she decided to document certain events that have taken place in various media since the beginning of 2018.
Alena Foustková is a multimedia artist who studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague in the studio of Ladislav Čepelák, majoring in printmaking. Foustková (born in 1957) emigrated to Canada in 1984 where she studied at George Brown College in Toronto. There she worked primarily in advertising and graphic design. In October 1995 she returned to the Czech Republic. She came back fully to her fine art career in 2009 and since that time she has also been sharing her experience with students in the Visual Art Studies and Business programs at Anglo-American University as well as at the University of New York in Prague (UNYP). Her work mainly involves paper and typography and their interconnection experimenting both with form and content. In her installations and interventions, she often works with the viewers themselves who become part of the work. The author has long been interested in the issues of mass media. She studies their ability to communicate, their style and influence on society.
The exhibition, Postcards from the Czech Republic, introduces Alena Foustková’s project, in which she decided to document certain events that have taken place in various media since the beginning of 2018. The news has been on social media networks, free press, but also in manipulative press. The format of the postcards represents a selected view of the Czech Republic on a single given day. Each postcard is prepared using various techniques which symbolize, reflect and characterize the message written into a postcard’s template. The message itself is just a snippet which we are bombarded with on social media networks, such as Facebook or the more open Twitter platform. Recorded in the first eight months of the year, it deals with the political scene, the relationship with neighboring countries, migration, national pride and interesting anniversaries. On the postcards, we can find a classic schnitzel in the shape of the Czech Republic, the 100th anniversary of the bra, red underwear and many more.
Enjoy a few samples of her work below. We encourage you to plan a trip to beautiful Kutná Hora before the New Year to see the exhibit up close and personal.
