Technology and Politics

The interaction of technology and politics has become increasingly important over the last few decades. Whether we are talking about technology as an empowering tool (organizing protests and revolutions, or spreading awareness of important issues and connecting people with representatives, or documenting abuses) or as a potential weapon (drone warfare and cyberwarfare, or “fake news” and “hacked” elections, or surveillance and monitoring), the role it plays in politics is significant. Is China’s new surveillance tech and policy, coupled with its social credit policy, an anomaly or the future? How should AI be used, and is it dangerous? Will social media continue to divide society? Come discuss these questions, and ask your own.

The lead professor will be George Hays II, Chair of International Relations.
