On November 27th and 28th 2015, the Anglo-American University hosted the fourth edition of The European Union and the Politicization of Europe conference series organized by the Euroacademia non-profit organization dedicated to spreading knowledge across disciplines and academic institutions.

This edition of the “Politicization of Europe” conference focused on several aspects of EU politics. First day’s panels were dedicated to the European Union’s legitimacy and values within as well as in the near neighbourhood of the EU, trying to assess how these values and norms affect actual day-to-day policy-making practice, and how are they transferred via diplomacy and cultural instruments – such as the social media. Second day of the conference continued the legitimacy and values theme, but this time from the perspective of the European Parliament elections in the context of ongoing crises (Eurozone crisis, migration crisis). True to the multidisciplinary tradition of Euroacademia events, the second day also saw panels bringing together art, culture and diplomacy.

AAU’s representation at the conference were School of Humanities and Social Science’s Vidhu Maggu, who presented a paper on solidarity as a key value in Europe, especially in times of crisis; and Daniela Lences Chalaniova, the interim dean of the School of International Relations and Diplomacy, who reflected on the present day migration crisis through the lens of key European states’ political cartoonists.
