Richard Akel, LL.B., LL.M., Dip. Trial Advocacy
Richard is a graduate of Auckland University, N.Z. (LL.B. Honours), Cambridge University, England (LL.M.), National Institute of Trial Advocacy, U.S. (Diploma of Trial Advocacy), and the Academy of Art University, San Francisco, CA (Master of Fine Arts). He is admitted to the Bar in N.Z., Western Australia, England & Wales, California, and the Bar of the U.S. Supreme Court. (He is a former member of the New York Bar.)
He practiced law in N.Z. as a Crown prosecutor, Department of Labour lawyer, and corporate counsel, and in the U.S. as a litigation/trial lawyer. He is also a barrister and member of Lincoln’s Inn of Court in London.
Richard has tutored law at the University of Auckland and the University of Western Australia. He served in the N.Z. Army, was actively involved in the anti-apartheid movement and played rugby at Auckland and Cambridge Universities. He is also a film and television scriptwriter.
