History
Anglo-American University (AAU) is the oldest private university in the Czech Republic. It was founded in 1990, shortly after the collapse of communism, as the Anglo-American College (AAC) by Jansen Raichl with the assistance of Dr. Vlasta Raichlová with the vision to create an educational institution that would combine the best of American and British academic principles with Central European traditions.
During its history AAU has always attracted strong personalities to its academic community, today it prides itself with gifted students from about 60 countries worldwide and renowned international faculty often trained at best universities of the world, including Harvard, Yale, Stanford and others. AAU alumni have always excelled in their professional career and work worldwide in top positions in business, academia, politics, diplomacy and media.
From its beginning AAU was divided into School of Business Administration, School of Humanities and Social Sciences and School of Law. In 2006 and 2010, respectively, School of International Relations and Diplomacy and School of Journalism were established.
AAU has always cooperated with many foreign universities. From 2004 University of Wales is awarding its diplomas to our bachelor students in law, from 2008 Chapman University, home of 2002 Nobel Price winner for Economy Dr. Vernon Smith, is awarding the diplomas to our MBA students. Hundreds of universities, mostly from USA, have been sending students to AAU as study abroad students, exchange students or degree seeking students. Many AAU alumni have continued their studies as graduate students at famous universities like Berkeley or Stanford.
During its first years AAU operated in several different locations, later it moved all of the operations under a single roof, into a large building on the outskirts of Prague. In 1999 AAU established its campus in the breathtaking location in the historical heart of Prague. The campus consists of 2 medieval palaces of Lázeňská 2 and Lázeňská 4, the site of the historic convent of the Sovereign Military Order of the Knights of Malta, and the palace at the corner of Letenská and U Lužického semináře streets (entrance from Letenská 1).Our students receive the imprint from both the special beauty and spirit of this place, which link us with history and culture.
From 2005 Anglo-American University is enjoying an unprecedented academic and economic growth. It has opened a wide range of graduate programs, has attracted many high caliber professors and substantially broadened its own research activities. Number of students has multiplied without compromising the strict academic requirements on admission and study. Strong economic results have allowed to make significant investments into the stipend funds, campus development and enabled to hire the best professionals for faculty and administration. AAU has become the leading private university in the country and one of the most respected English institutions of higher education based in the non-English speaking country.
