How many classes can I take per semester?

Students may choose to study on a full-time or part-time basis. The AAU system of course scheduling allows students to have maximum flexibility in their schedule. Classes are scheduled in three time-blocks during the day and one in the evening. During the Fall and Spring Full-time students take four or five classes per semester (12 to 15 credits), and Part-time students take one to three (3 to 9 credits).

During the Summer students may take one or two courses (3 to 6 credits), and in the Winter may take one (3 credits). Students with a 3.0 or above grade point average may petition their school chair to take six courses (18 credits) in Fall or Spring semester, or three courses (9 credits) in Summer. During the Fall and Spring semesters, classes meet once a week for 3 hours for a period of 15 weeks. In addition to the time spent in the classroom, students are expected to spend approximately 6 hours a week for each studying and completing assigments. The weekly readings and class attendance are the minimum requirements for full participation in a course. During the Summer and Winter semesters, the total number of classroom hours and credits (3 per course) remains the same. Classes in the Summer semester meet twice a week for three-and-a-half hours over a period of six weeks. Classes in the Winter semester meet three times a week for four hours.

What does a course’s code number mean?

The code numbers are designed to give you an idea of the relative difficulty of a class. The numbering system begins at 100 and continues through 400 for the most advanced classes.
