Your Bridge to a World of Opportunity

AAU is a very international university with an unusually diverse student body (typically more than 60 nationalities are represented; only about 30% of students are Czech or Slovak).  This is a result of using English as a medium of instruction, which allows us to recruit very widely, but at the same time predisposes our international activities in certain specific directions.  Our international strategy emerges from and develops this demographic reality.

The diverse ethnic and cultural mix of our classrooms already goes some way towards preparing students for the challenges of the modern world, but this cannot substitute for the direct experience of living or studying abroad.  AAU therefore strongly encourages students to participate in international activities, whether that means classic student exchanges, or shorter intensive programs such as community outreach:

Erasmus Exchange

The EU’s Erasmus program has been an important part of AAU’s push toward internationalization. It has allowed students to experience the diversity of life and education across the EU, which is relevant not only for students from the Czech and Slovak Republics, but also for AAU students who have come from abroad to study in Prague helping them gain a better understanding of the EU as a whole.

International University Exchange

Outside the EU, our efforts have historically been focused on the USA and other English-speaking countries; but increasingly we have also been developing exchange partnerships in Asia, since this is an important economic area where many AAU graduates may seek employment.

Why Internationalize?

We believe international experience makes an important contribution to our students’ learning outcomes:

  1. It allows them to gain direct hands-on experience with international diversity, thereby improving academic quality.
  2. It teaches them to observe and analyze the national and international challenges of other countries.
  3. It trains individuals to employ different perspectives to solve the challenges at hand and thus to become better citizens, always in a global context.

Areas of Development

Accordingly, AAU has made it a priority to develop and extend the international opportunities that are available.  Specifically, in the past five years we have:

  • Trebled the size of our exchange network and increased geographical spread.  New destinations include Canada, South Korea, Israel and Uruguay.  We have also significantly extended our partnerships in the UK, Germany, and the Netherlands.
  • Doubled AAU student participation in exchanges over a five-year period.
  • Added the option of international internships by joining the consortium of Erasmus Work Placements coordinated by Evropská rozvojová agentura (since 2014).
  • Developed our portfolio of short-term summer programs in cooperation with international partners like the University of Florida, Virginia Commonwealth University and the Department of Slavic Languages and Literature of Harvard University.
