COURSE DESCRIPTION The course is considered as an introduction to Central and Eastern European politics. It focuses on political events in the Region mainly after World War II such as the rise of Communism, the Communist takeover, nature of Stalinist regimes, crises in the bloc (Hungary 1956, Prague Spring 1968 in Czechoslovakia, Solidarity in Poland), growth of oposition forces in communist states, the revolutions of 1989 and then, in the second part, it deals with various ways of transition to democracy. Since 1998 East Central Europe has been affected by a phenomenon of the 'colour revolutions', referring to socio-political transformations in this Region. In some countries these 'revolutions' have led to a political change from authoritarian rule to democracy, in other countries not. The course is concerned with the analyses of successful as well as unsuccessful cases. II. TEACHING METHODS The course will be based on lectures, which will bring an overview of weekly topics. Students participation is compulsory in the seminars. Attendants are expected not only sit in the classroom, but their active involvement in the seminar discussions is required. This approach should help in forming of students own understanding of the main issues in East Central European politics since World War II. Each student will give one presentation on topic assigned by the instructor at the beginning of the seminar. This should serve as a basis for further debate in the class. III. REQUIREMENTS Students will be responsible for reading the required material PRIOR totheseminar for which it has been assigned. Most of the seminar readings areincluded in the course reader (available in the AAU Library). Students will receive allother materials assigned as seminar texts. Readings will serve as basis for class discussions. One or two students will introduce assigned reading for a given week and ten lead the debate over the article(s). The instructor reserves to alter the reading in order to facilitate theclass. Students need to have full attendance (only 3 classes can be missed, but only when excused) in order to complete the course, pass a final written test. Test will cover subject matter from readings, lectures and class debates. All class participants will give verbal presentation in the class. Topics willbeassigned by the instructor. Each student will submit his/her presentation at least 5 days in advance via e-mail (pastircikova@gmx.net). Students are expected to perform the topic at academic level: usage of notes is acceptable but not full time reading. Every presenting person is welcome to use audiovisual means (such as power point). Each presentation shouldnt exceed 20 minutes. IV. ASSESMENT The final grade will be determined as follows: Class Participation and Attendance 20 % Individual Presentation 20 % Mid-term Test 20 % Final Test 40 % V.
