Strong emphasis will be paid to the historical roots, including economic, ethnic, religious and cultural developments. The introductory part of the course will examine the term the Balkan countries and South East Europe, and will provide a view of the Ottoman Empire, following the national movements and struggles of the Balkan peoples. These phenomena will be interpreted in a comparative perspective and in combination with selected chapters from Balkan history in the period of Communism (e.g.Yugoslavia, the civil war in Greece, the idea of Balkan Federation, Tito, etc.). The climax of the course will be an examination of the disintegeration of Yugoslavia, problems of multiethnic Macedonia, and the Europeanization of the Balkans. Structure of the course and requirements Every week session consists of a two parts: 2 hrs of lecture followed by 1 hr of discussion. The discussion consists of paper performed consecutive by all students where the topic of preceding lecture would be discussed. Students activity is required during lectures and particularly during discussion session all students will read a compulsory text every week (at least 50% of attendance is required). Students are also required to prove knowledge of content of lectures: there will be a written examination at the end of the course. Final classification depends on presented papers - 30%; students activities during discussion sessions - 30%; written examination (content of lectures will be tested) at the end of the course - 40%.
